Ms. Dana Asby
Hi! I'm one of the second grade teachers at H.B. Stroud Elementary School! It's my first year at Stroud, but I've been working in elementary schools for the past ten years. My passion is passing on a love of learning and helping all students reach their full potential.
I graduated from University of Georgia this summer with my Masters of Education in Educational Psychology. Specifically, I studied Gifted and Creative Education. Along with focusing on multiculturalism, I did some research about using gifted education curriculum in the regular education classroom. As a teacher, I feel it is my obligation to give each student an education that best suites them. I think there are many gifted education methods that can benefit all students, whether they have been identified as requiring special education, gifted education, or any other special services.
Creativity is another area of interest for me. I believe that some people are just born more creative than others; however, I also believe that creativity can be taught. It's not just me who believes this. Many eminent scholars in the field of creativity advocate for teaching creativity in unison with core curriculum. I plan on doing just this in my classroom!
I've known that I wanted to be a teacher since I was in junior high school. I requested a kindergarten classroom as my destination for Career Day way back when I was 13 years old. I knew the moment I stepped inside that classroom that it was where I was meant to be. When I was a senior in high school, I had the opportunity to spend half of my day, every day, in a kindergarten classroom.
When I went off to Missouri State University to pursue my Elementary Education degree, I thought I'd be a kindergarten teacher four years later. As it so often does, life had different plans for me. After graduation, I was a para-professional in a first grade classroom as well as a Pre-K teacher at La Petite Academy. That summer, I taught another Pre-K class at Lighthouse Child Development Center, a free preschool for low income families. All three of these experiences were rewarding and taught me so very much.
In the Fall of 2008, I went to Japan to teach English for what I thought would be one year. After a year and nine months of teaching children in private conversation schools in rural, snowy Japan, I was offered the opportunity to move to Japan's 4th biggest city and teach in the public school system. Being a curious educator, I took that opportunity and spent two years teaching English in the Nagoya Public School System. I spent most of my time in junior high schools, but during the frequent testing periods, I spent weeks at a time in various elementary schools. Every time I had to leave the elementary schools to return to the junior high schools, I was disappointed.
That's when I knew I needed to get back to the U.S. to teach American elementary students. My interest in gifted education led me to UGA and Athens, where I started my Masters. Now, I'm ready to devote all of my energy to being an elementary classroom teacher in Clarke County School District!
